All of the SASSI restaurant participants have committed to the SASSI Charter, which means:
  • Ensuring that all seafood on offer is legal and not on the SASSI Red list.
  • Phasing out unsustainable seafood products and replacing them with sustainable substitutes;
  • Promoting sustainable choices from responsible, well managed fisheries;
  • Continuously evaluating seafood product ranges against strict legal, traceability, and sustainability criteria.
  • Providing consumers with seafood that is adequately labelled and includes information on the species, origin, and production method (fishing gear used, or wild-caught/farmed), or any credible eco-labels that may apply;
  • Always endeavouring to offer seafood that is traceable to its origins, making use of suitable traceability schemes or mechanisms;

Brass Bell


Kalk Bay, Cape Town 

The Brass Bell Restaurant needs absolutely no introduction. Starting out as a tiny seafood restaurant and pub over 60 years ago, today they're still a favourite haunt for locals and tourists alike, and have grown in leaps and bounds. Renovations have been frequent over the years but this is an establishment that is always offering something new and different. Located on the train station in Kalk Bay and bordering the ocean, the Brass Bell boasts 2 pubs, 3 restaurants and a pizza terrace. The views are unsurpassed, one can survey the ocean or soak up the nostalgia of quaint Kalk Bay Harbour, one of only 2 working harbours in the Cape. The terrace and gazebo downstairs spill into a series of tidal pools and a favourite activity of weekend patrons is to take a cool dip between drinks or lunch courses.

The upstairs bar is cozy, done out in wooden artifacts from old ships. The main restaurant is more upmarket, serving a selection of exquisite seafood dishes - naturally. The Oriental Cabin serves a wonderful selection of eastern delights and with it's enormous glass windows overlooking the Terrace and ocean, is the perfect spot for a bit of whale watching. The Terrace downstairs is more informal and serves everything from seafood and pizzas to burgers and steaks. The fact that the staff are fast, friendly and very efficient is just another reason to try this delightful eatery.

The atmosphere is bustling and very relaxed, and there's always something happening. Weekends are extremely busy, everyone seems to want to relax in the sun and enjoy a bite to eat. But nobody quite knows whether it's the excellent food and service or the laid back mood that keeps people coming back time and again. Whatever it is, don't pass up the opportunity to try The Brass Bell. This is the type of place that everyone has to visit at least once in their lifetime.

The Brass Bell offers a stunning gazebo with breathtaking sea views for functions, and they cater for tour groups, Christmas and New Year parties, company dinners etc.

Directions:
From Cape Town take the M3 all the way to the end. Exit and turn left down towards the Main Road. At the robots turn right into Main Road and follow through Lakeside, Muizenberg and St James to Kalk Bay. The Brass Bell is on the left hand side on the station, but to access this restaurant you pass through underneath the subway. From Simon's Town follow the Main Road through Glencairn and Fish Hoek into Kalk Bay. The Brass Bell is on the right.
