Sustainable Seafood
In the past few years, a new conservation buzz-word has entered the seafood scene: Sustainability. But what does sustainable seafood really mean? Given the popularity of seafood and the serious environmental concerns surrounding many seafood sources, as well as the abundance of illegally caught and traded seafood on the global markets, governmental and conservation agencies are increasingly concerned about the lack of information available to consumers.
Without being provided with accurate information about a species in question, its status and origin, as well as the fishing method used to catch it consumers are unable to make informed decisions and may inadvertently support illegal and unsustainable seafood choices. Unfortunately traditional fisheries management has thus far had a poor track record in managing the harvest of seafood stocks at sustainable levels.
